Soomepoisid - The Finnish Boys

Approximately 3400 Estonian volunteers (so-called “Finnish boys”, soomepoisid) fought in the Finnish armed forces during World War II.

During the German occupation of Estonia many young men were volunteered or were drafted into German military service. Many did not want to do so and they escaped from Estonia to Finland to join the Finnish armed forces. The majority of these Estonian volunteers formed the 200th Infantry Regiment (JR 200) of the Finnish Army. Many Estonians also served in the Finnish Navy.

Friends and relatives of the Soomepoisid have formed associations in Estonia and Finland. The aim of these associations is on the one hand to support the welfare of the veterans and their widows and on the other hand to disseminate information about the Soomepoisid.
